SUMMARY:Multi-year Expert Meeting on Transport\, Trade Logistics and Trade Facilitation\, fifth session
DESCRIPTION:The session will address the underlying linkages between\, on the one hand\, international transport and trade facilitation and\, on the other hand\, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals.\n\nThe international community adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development\, unprecedented in scale and ambition\, and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals and 169 targets in 2015.\n\nIntegrated and indivisible\, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development aims at balancing the three dimensions of sustainable development\, providing a shared vision and shaping collective action in support of an economically viable\, socially inclusive and environmentally-friendly development path.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDuring 2016\, the first full year of implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development\, the international community changed gears\, focusing attention on the implementation and operationalization of the Sustainable Development Goals in line with their targets.\n\nTransport and trade facilitation\, the core areas of trade logistics\, encompass activities with strategic importance for globalized trade\, supply chains and world economic interconnectedness. They are cross-cutting enabling factors deeply rooted in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and necessary\, directly and indirectly\, for the achievement of several Goals.\n\nUNCTAD has long recognized the nexus between sustainable development and trade logistics. Attention to the integrated treatment of the economic\, social and environmental dimensions of transport and trade facilitation has further heightened over recent years as reflected in successive UNCTAD mandates\, namely the Accra Accord\, Doha Mandate and Nairobi Maafikiano.\n\nAgainst this background and drawing upon UNCTAD work in the field\, this session will discuss selected issues that lie at the interface of trade logistics and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.\n\nThe aim is to discuss ways in which countries\, in collaboration with all relevant stakeholders\, could join efforts to implement sustainable and resilient transport and trade facilitation solutions in support of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development\, aimed at “transforming our world”.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nhttp://unctad.org/en/pages/MeetingDetails.aspx?meetingid=1440

SUMMARY:22nd Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC (COP 22)
DESCRIPTION:UNCTAD Side Event: Strenghtening the Focus on Freight Transport in the Climate Agenda (11 November 2016\, 15:00-16:00)\n\n\n\n\n\nFreight transport accounts for 42% of transport CO2 emissions and is increasingly recognized as an important sector that has a role to play in curbing global GHG emissions. An increasing number of sustainable transport initiatives are being developed or implemented to move ahead with this agenda. In this context\, UNCTAD is organizing a side event on the margins of COP 22 to identify and discuss the freight transport and climate agenda nexus.\n\nMore specifically\, the event aims to help:\n\n Raise awareness about the role of sustainable freight transport in enabling an effective sustainable development path.\n Share best practices in the field of low-carbon and sustainable freight transport and discuss potential collaboration across modes and among stakeholders from both the public and the private sectors.\n Articulate a way forward.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTarget audience: Governments\, industry\, IGOs\, NGOs\, financing institutions\, academia\, civil society\, and\, generally parties involved or interested in freight transport and its sustainability.\n\nPanelists will include representatives from government\, IMO\, transit and transport corridors\, experts in low-carbon transport.\n\n\n\n\n\n \nTransport Day 2016 Break-out Session (13 November 2016\, 10:45-12:00)\n\n\n\nAchieving low-carbon freight transport systems is essential for the realization of a sustainable development path. Various measures could help improve the carbon footprint of freight transport and enhance its sustainability. However\, effective implementation of such measures and optimization of their climate mitigation potential calls for concerted and coordinated action at all levels and requires promoting key enabling factors including finance and best practices from within and outside the freight transport sector.\n\nAgainst this background\, the session will consider:\n\n Best practices in terms of green freight and low-carbon solutions that could be applied in the freight transport sector\n The role of policy makers/regulators and industry players in enabling low-carbon freight transport\n Potential tools and financing solutions that could support low-carbon freight transport projects and initiatives.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe target audience includes Governments\, industry\, IGOs\, NGOs\, financing institutions\, academia\, civil society\, and\, generally parties involved or interested in freight transport and its sustainability.\n\n\n

SUMMARY:High-Level Meeting on Sustainable Transport of Landlocked Developing Countries
DESCRIPTION:Background \nOwing to their long distances from the sea\, landlocked developing countries (LLDCs) face disproportionately high transport and trade transaction costs that further intensify their comparative disadvantage relative to other developing countries. These unique challenges of LLDCs are stemming from their geographical location\, as well as inadequate physical infrastructure\, lack of effective implementation of a conducive legal framework on transit transport\, low productive capacities\, low diversification and value addition of their economies and exports.\n\nGiven their geographical location\, increasing connectivity is a critical objective for the LLDCs in order to reap the benefits of globalization. Establishment of integrated\, sustainable and efficient transport systems is a critical element in this endeavor\, as called for by the Vienna Programme of Action for the LLDCs for the decade 2014-2024. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development contains commitments with regard to transport and infrastructure development\, in particular in SDG 9 and SDG 11that are of critical importance to the LLDCs.\nThe Event \nThe High-Level Meeting on Sustainable Transport of LLDCs is jointly organized by the Government of Bolivia\, the United Nations Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries\, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States (UN-OHRLLS) and United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA).  \n\nThe meeting will review the progress made by LLDCs\, as well as challenges\, in the development and maintenance of efficient\, reliable and sustainable transport systems and the linkages between the Vienna Programme of Action and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in the area of transport. It will identify new strategies\, cooperation initiatives and policy recommendations on how to develop and further improve transit transport systems for the benefit of the LLDCs\, strengthen cooperation\, enhance mobilization of financing for infrastructure development and maintenance and promote sustainable transport in the LLDCs. The recommendations of the meeting are expected to contribute the perspectives of the LLDCs into the first global sustainable transport conference to be held from 26-27 November 2016 in Turkmenistan.\n\nThe meeting will be attended by the Ministers of Transport of LLDCs. Ministers of transport of transit developing countries and selected development partners\, as well as representatives of the UN system\, other international\, regional and sub-regional organizations and financial institutions\, private sector\, NGOs and other stakeholders will also be invited to participate at senior official level.

SUMMARY:Sustainable Transportation for the 2030 Agenda: Boosting the Arteries of Global Trade
DESCRIPTION:Building productive capacity to transform economies\n\nAn efficient flow of goods is essential to shared prosperity. Seaborne trade accounts for 80 per cent of the volume of global trade. Maritime transport represents the arteries of the global trading system\, and international production networks\, allowing producers worldwide to reach producers or consumers in faraway countries. And freight transport is emerging as a sector that can contribute to economic as well as social and environmental goals. This round table will address the key principles and essential elements of a common vision for sustainable freight transport. It will examine tools for reducing carbon emissions in freight transport and for achieving more clean and environmentally-friendly freight transport systems\, as well as for ensuring that our transport systems can cope with climate change.

SUMMARY:UNCTAD Training and Capacity-Building Workshop on Sustainable Freight Transport and Finance
DESCRIPTION:Sustainable freight transport entails\, in particular\, sustainable transport policies\, planning strategies\, and investment decisions that effectively balance the economic\, environmental and social objectives. This is particularly crucial for developing countries\, including in East Africa as they have the opportunity – given their developmental stage and current focus on infrastructure development process –to consider integrating at early stages of infrastructure investment and planning\, relevant sustainability principles and criteria.\n\nUNCTAD will be delivering a capacity-building and training workshop on “Sustainable Freight Transport and Finance” on 14-18 March 2016 in Nairobi\, Kenya. The workshop aims to raise awareness and share experiences and best practices among relevant public and private sector stakeholders on the various aspects of sustainable freight transport and finance. The aim is also to build the capacity of relevant stakeholders\, including in particular\, policy makers\, transport corridor managers and operators\, financial institutions and investment agencies to identify relevant policy priority areas as well as action required to promote and implement sustainable freight transport systems.\n\nThe training will benefit close to 85 participants from Burundi\, Democratic Republic of Congo\, Kenya\, Tanzania\, Rwanda\, South Sudan and Uganda. These countries are members of East Africa’s Northern and Central Transit and Transport Corridors. UNEP\, UNECA\, COMESA and EAC will also take part in this initiative.\n\nClick here to see the programme.
