National capacity building training workshop on Eco-driving, Kingston- Jamaica

UNCTAD’s regional SFT capacity-building and training workshop on Sustainable Freight Transport and Finance held in Barbados provided participants with a number of tools and strategies to be used in ‘greening’ Caribbean freight. In this regard, Jamaica’s All Island Truckers Association sought UNCTAD’s support in developing and delivering a national eco-driving training workshop. The workshop aimed to raise awareness and build the capacity of local stakeholders in the public and private sectors on the sustainability principles in freight transport with specific focus on eco-driving.

Through partnership and collaboration, the 3-day training workshop was delivered 31 October – November 2, 2018 in Kingston, Jamaica. Participants engaged in training and outcome-related discussions on the principles and techniques of eco-driving with a view to develop a tailored national eco-driving training curriculum. The training benefited close to 55 participants including, transport policy makers, transport regulating authorities, truck owner-operators and drivers and fleet managers, public passenger bus drivers as well as training and research institutions.

The training workshop was co-organized with the Ministry of Transport and Mining, Jamaica, the Department of Natural Resources Canada and the All Island Truckers Association, Jamaica.

Mr. Gary Murray, a consultant who works with Natural Resources Canada delivering fuel efficiency training to fleet managers and drivers, as well as updating these fuel efficiency training programs and Mr. Doug DeGrow, a Certified Driver Instructor with Kim Richardson Transportation Specialists in Canada, currently leads a team of instructors training students on tractor-trailers, straight trucks and heavy equipment conducted the 3-day training workshop.
